December 4 : Tuna Tussle

Captain's Log: December 4, 2024

Location: Offshore Waters

Weather: Frigid temperatures, biting wind, overcast skies

Today was a true testament to the passion and perseverance of the fishing spirit. We set out early on a super frigid morning, the kind that sends chills down your spine. Our first order of business was jigging for bluefish to fill our bait supply. The cold air nipped at our fingers, but we quickly filled the livewell, ensuring we had plenty of lively bait for the day ahead.

As the temperatures hovered near freezing, Jacob took it upon himself to play chef. He whipped up breakfast sandwiches on the grill, a warm treat that not only heated our bodies but lifted our spirits. Nothing like the smell of grilled sandwiches on a cold morning to bring smiles to our frozen faces!

Around 12:30, we had a stroke of luck. Out of nowhere, we spotted a school of bluefin tuna, their massive bodies breaching the surface right beside our bait. It was game time! In an instant, we were hooked up to two tuna simultaneously—an exhilarating moment as the 80W reels screamed in protest, the drag singing its familiar tune.

As we fought to bring the fish in, it became clear that one of the tuna was significantly larger than the other. In a strategic decision, we opted to cut the line on the smaller fish, focusing all our efforts on the beast that Colin had hooked. What followed was a grueling three-hour battle, with Colin manning the rod like a true warrior. The fight tested both his stamina and technique, but as we neared the end, the fish suddenly made a final, powerful run, pinwheeling near the boat before the line chafed off. It was a heartbreaking moment, and we all felt the sting of loss.

But the day wasn’t over just yet. Jacob and Josef, ever the optimists, broke out some cookies to sweeten the sour taste of defeat as we began our journey home. We shared laughs and stories, reminiscing about the fight and the excitement of the day. Our lips were chapped and our hearts a bit broken, but the camaraderie on the boat reminded us why we love this sport.

As we headed back to port, the cold didn’t seem quite so biting. Tomorrow is a new day, and with it comes the promise of another chance to hook into a bluefin. We’re eager to get back out there, ready to learn from today’s experience and face whatever challenges await us.

Signing off with determination and hope for a better tomorrow.
